Shoot Yer Kids

about the workshops

ready to take showstopping pictures of your kids?

Join photographers Cat London of Cat London Photography and Liz Cooper of Liz Cooper Photography for workshops in downtown Kingston, Ontario, that will teach you everything you need to know to take Pinterest-worthy photos of your children. We offer two levels of workshop: a camera bootcamp for beginners and the Level Up version for those who have figured out the basics.

Keep learning and shooting! All workshop graduates will become part of a private Shoot Yer Kids Facebook group where you can ask questions, get photography ideas and feedback, share your amazing kid photos, and take part in regular Shoot Yer Kids photo challenges to keep you shooting.

Shoot Yer Kids Camera Bootcamp
2 hours, includes shooting practice with older children
$129+HST

This intimate, small-group session (maximum six participants) gives you the most time with us to master the basics of your camera and become comfortable shooting under different conditions. Bring your DSLR or point-and-shoot camera with manual capabilites* and we will help you figure out how to use what you have to get the best photos of your kids. We can help you master the tools you have — you don't need to buy a fancy lens to take great pictures of your kids. We'll get you out of auto mode and taking amazing pics of the kids in your life!

* Not sure if your camera is a good fit? Email us and we’ll help you figure it out.

You will learn how to get the most out of your camera and give you a firm understanding of the key principles of photography including
  • Your camera's settings and features (bring your camera and your manual if you have it) and how to stop relying on the automatic settings
  • The technical stuff: The basics of the exposure triangle (aperture, shutter speed, and ISO)
  • How to get lovely blurry backgrounds and make your subject pop
  • The basics of composition
  • Reducing blur, or how to photograph a kid who never stops moving
  • How you can capture your child's spirit in each photo

Shooting practice with real, live (older) children is included so you can practice the principles you’ve learned.

We know it's hard to remember what you learn, and that's why we'll send you home with
  • The Shoot Yer Kids Bootcamp Guide, with all the information we cover, along with your notes that you'll have about your specific camera's functions, buttons, and settings.
  • Exercises to apply what you've learned at home
  • A "fridge guide" Shooting Cheat Sheet to post on your fridge for a quick reminder of how to work with what you're shooting

Shoot Yer Kids Next Level
3 hours, includes shooting practice with older children
$199+HST

This next-level workshop presumes that you have a basic familiarity with your camera*. Groups are small (maximum eight participants) to maximize the fun and learning. We tackle the challenges specific to photographing children and all the skills you need, and we have a heck of a good time doing it. Enjoy coffee, tea, and halftime treats by our friends at Epicurious Catering.

* You don’t need to have taken our Camera Bootcamp, but you should be familiar enough with your camera to know how to change your shutter speed, aperture, and ISO, and understand what happens when you change those settings.

You will learn about
  • The technical stuff: Master the exposure triangle (a basic understanding of shutter speed, aperture, and ISO is presumed)
  • Lighting: Finding (or making) the kind of light that makes everyone look good
  • Composition guidelines and techniques
  • White balance and the colour of light
  • Focus modes: nail your focus every time
  • Gear and why you don't need to spend a fortune
  • Shooting great child candids and capturing what's unique about your favourite kiddos
  • "Studio" or posed photos, or how to get a great kid pic for your Christmas card
  • Troubleshooting common photography problems and challenges

Shooting practice with real, live (older) children is included so you can practice what you’ve learned.

We know it's hard to remember what you learn, and that's why we'll send you home with
  • The comprehensive Shoot Yer Kids Next Level Workbook, with all the information we cover and much more, along with your notes that you'll have about your specific camera's functions, buttons, and settings.
  • Exercises to apply what you've learned at home
